Mt Nebo - My Arch Nemesis

Jacaranda Trees

View from Mt. Nebo

I sent out an update about Mt Nebo before I started blogging so for you who hadn't previously heard about this hill is a mean one!

Last week was good for me on the bike.  Getting up at 5am 3x and totaling just over 200k.  Considering I have a job now, it's not too bad.  I've been riding with the other mechanish from work.  He rides most mornings and now he's got me racing next saturday.  Who ever places better doesn't have to buy coffee!  I'm just worried about getting dropped!   Apparently the race scene in Brissy isn't all that hot so I'm hoping 'Elite' doesn't kick my arse too bad!  It's hard to believe when you see hundreds of people riding any day of the week before 6am!

Anywho!  My ride to Nebo was a much different experience this time.  I was riding with Julian (Mechanish) and his older buddy Peter (Former Masters Pursuit World Champ)  Yeah no biggie.  The guy had the rainbow jersey on his shoulders a little while ago.  He was no Hopkins but fack could he go up hill!

We went up Nebo through this 'Goat Track'.  Apparently you can see goats but I was too busy taking in the breathtaking views of the city to my left or remembering to keep my legs moving and heart beating.  5km of BRUTAL climbing on this dirt road that hadn't seen any type of upkeep in eons!  Dancing on the pedals was not an option as you would just lose traction.  The total ascent for the day was just shy of 1200m over 65km.  Hard day in the saddle!

Fortunately, it is blooming season for the Jacaranda tree.  As you can see, it is a huge tree with purple flowers.  The coolest part is the smell of the flowers in the morning.  You can smell the trees hundreds of meters away and because Brisbane has one of the highest concentration of these trees in Queensland, you can smell them all the time!

Anywho! Until Next time!

RLWC08 - SEMI FINAL TICKETS!!!

Who's got two thumbs and also has Rubgy League World Cup Tickets?!  THIS GUY!!!  Well I don't have them yet, but I will by the time most of you lot wake up and read this!

If you are wondering WTF is Rugby League.  Well its kind of like rugby.... but different!  Each team is allowed 5 'touches' or something.  It's pretty huge in Australia with a professional league and apparently it is also played in other countries.  Haha! you learn about new sports everyday!  I don't know the rules but what I do know is that there are 10 of the drunkess nations down for the event.  Canada not making the cut somehow, I will have to root for my Football Boys!  ALLEZ LES BLEU!!!!  La France Mes Cris de Batard!  I will bring a bottle of wine and stiff french baguette just incase the irish want to get rowdy.

Anywho, it's an excellent opportunity to hang out with a bunch of people from all over and get absolutely ripped!  Not to mention the 22 guys on the field pretending to be Mac trucks running into the opposing team!

Lindsay is sorting her side of the story out.  She thinks going to some island with her school friends will be cooler.  Comments are strongly encouraged.  Don't hold back!  Let her know she would be making a pretty decent mistake!

Hey 'Dell!  Think you can hook me up with another Jersey!?  The Football boys really messed up at the Euro this summer, but I have a good feeling about my frogs this time!

Maccas: It's like McD's but fancier

I had been eyeing the local Maccas up since I got here.  It was tough to indulge with all the little local eateries but after an awesome 80k on the bike this morning, I gave in.  But it was totally ok because at Maccas in Australia they serve up your 1/4 pounder with avocado.  I understand they are slapping on more green fat but did you know avocados are the good fat?  Super thoughtful!  I got my usual fries and and chocolate shake, which tasted like cold nothing.  I actually had been pretty excited about the shake considering their milk taste so good.  It's fresh milk.  Not quite homo but way gayer than 2%!  Amazing!  In the end, I wasn't that impressed with my meal.  Let's just say those kids at Wharncliff and Oxford know what they are doing.

I made it through my first week of work.  I must say the shop is much different than anything else I've seen or worked in.  The week consisted of fancy bikes and wheels every day while watching music videos on 1 of the 4-5 plasmas in the shop.  Marcel (my boss) also holds wind trainning sessions on thursday afternoons.  Well let me tell you!  The sights were great!  I will make sure to have my hands clean by 1pm next week just incase any MILF's need a hand in setting up their bikes.

Well the week has been pretty low key, getting up at 730 everyday.  Most of you will be surprised to hear, I have been showering and shaving everyday!  Work days anywho!  It's pretty weird but I feel like some parts of me are growing up!

I give it another week before the old 4-5 day beard starts showing up at work!  But lets keep the thoughts positive for now!

Making use of that Visa

Some of you may have already heard the big news. I am working! Not doing the fruit thing, I am back where I first began. The womb of my working life. Le magazin de Velo! Surprise, Surprise! I know I said I've been done with retail but this shop is a little different. Hmm.. A lot actually!

As you walk through the two massive front doors, your eyes can't help but notice the beautiful sexy curves of all the carbon bikes. Full line ups from manufacturers like Orbea, Willer, and my personal soft spot, Pinarello. The Prince of Spain hanging on one wall amongst a couple dozen other top notch frames. To translate this last statement into 'non Style-Man' lingo: I waited about 8 months to get my blue Pinarello Prince in 2001. It was also the wrong color. This guy landed the frame size and color he wanted with the snap of his fingers. It's a pretty sexy frame, but he's only putting Record on it. Cheaping out if you ask me. That babe should outfitted out with the SUPAH RECORD! He bought his group before consulting Style Man. He will learn.
The cheapest bike in the store is an Argon 18 with Ultegra at about 1500 bones but the bulk of the bikes range from the mid 3000's to top models like Dogma's and Orca's priced well over 10. Its a very exclusive Concept Road store. The reason this store works for me. No wankers asking for deals on $329 mtn bikes.

My first 2 days consisted of wrenching on the team bikes. Pinarello's with D/A. To keep it simple and interesting for people who aren't familiar with cycling gear, all I really did all day is work on $4-5000 bikes. Not a bad first day.

The shop is also a massive coaching center with testing and altitude training available on site. There are daily shop rides starting at 5am. I went on Saturday with the intermediate group on a ride that would take us through a short easy climb and several long rolling sections. Well let me tell you! After being off the bike for just over 3 weeks, partly because of the magpies but mostly because of Fiji, I found some mountain goat legs I thought I left behind in 2003! My weight has consistently been at or bellow 178lbs but my riding has been very irregular in the last month.

Anywho, so far so good. I am hoping I can find that urge to race again after 4-5 years of injury and lazyness. My back/hip/knee problems seem to be under some control so it could be a good time to get back on the saddle!

There is a 'Groove and Wine' festival today in the park. Free wine and tunes!? Yup, we're there! Wit mon French accent, I will see wat le vin Ausralian taste like!

A Plus Tard!

Lost in the Pacific with Lots of Beer

So life has been tough recently. I spent all of September being unemployed and began the month of October in much the same way. Only October began on a flight to Nadi (pr. 'Nan' 'de') on the main Island of the Fiji Islands. It's tough, but someone has to do it. In any case,I had to atleast attempt to rectify my immigration record. Between Bermuda and my first attempt in Australia, I was 0-2. Ladies andGents, I am pleased to announce I am finally LEGALLY able to work in a foreign country. Something many of you probably assumed would never happen! There is faith in me somewhere out there!

Bermudian work permit next?! Who am I kidding?!

My week (was supposed to be 2 weeks but more on that later) on thePacific rock began on Oct. 1. A 3 hour flight and 2 hour time difference, I was now waiting for my bus at the hostel pickup corner at the airport with nothing more than my new AK Ski pack (thanks Evand Nate). Backpackers and uni students on school break slowly poured out of the arrival hall and joined me on my cramped little couch.

BULA!!! (hello in Fijian)

YES!! I am going to love this place! A foreign language so easy toLearn!? BULA! BULA! BULA! We are off on the bus and head towards the hostel. The shuttle has a different name from the hostel I am staying at, but the name of the beach is the same. We drive across the 2nd largest city of Fiji and I am amazed of the scenery. The city isnothing more than 1 street (on that side anyways) but the picturesque backdrop is breathtaking. Massive hills everywhere just in the middle of nowhere. The streets are rough and the area is pretty poor but the local businesses look to be relatively busy. Kids hang out justoutside the new Digicel shop, probably listening out for other people stylish ringtones! We hook a right and arrive at the hostel, not mine!

Get off the bus and ask the driver if he is continuing on to Smugglers Cove, my home for the next 3 nights. Unfortunately, I got on the wrong shuttle, but another is on its way to get me and I am told to hang out at the current hostel until it arrives.

Bula! Nadi Bay hostel! The driver tells me it shouldn't be more than 20 minutes. It didn't make a difference to me. I knew no one and had nothing better do anyways! 20 minutes in Fiji time was more like40-50 minutes! Nothing out of the ordinary really, so off to Smugglers we go!

I check into the hostel and get my passcard for my Pirate Dorm at a rate of 30FIJI$ a night. Pirate Dorm... my imagination runs wild as to what could be going on behind those closed doors. Sails, ropecourse, canons and copious amounts of smoke, rum and swords? Nearly all that, but really it was 36 bunks arranged in cubicles of 4. There wasn't much personal space but who cares! I was in Fiji! My firstday was pretty boring. Had 4-5 beers and these gross potato wedges as to try and not spend too much. Hung out with these english boys who were off the next day but we drank and chatted about what there was to do on the islands for a few hours.
The Fiji main island is a gateway to all the other islands. Land hereand go to other islands that offer things that you want to do and onlyhead back to the main island when you are ready to head back home, or if you need need time to sober up before heading to another island. Make sense? Anywho, I was Off to the pirate dorm pretty early to read this amazing book I picked up about this english boy who gets screwed by Russia, Zone 22 by Tig Hague. 5 stars, highly recommended.

I got woken up a few times during the night as drunk people comestumbling to find their beds. But all'n'all I had a good night sleep. Took advantage of my free breakfast and coffee and headed to the Smugglers beach just in our backyard. The hostels set up was sweet. Nice big deck, sweet pool and a cool Fijian Hut (forget the name!) and then, ofcourse, the beach with hammocks, and loads of chairs. I spent most of the morning reading on the beach soaking up the sun. Took a sea kayak out for a little burn but the strong wind made it tough. A quick email to the Australian government to get my Visa game going and it was time to have another local brew.

After stimulating my mind and exercising all morning it was time to get my game face on. Fijian beer isn't the hottest, but it comes in these rad little 'stuby' bottles. That and it is also 4 bucks FIJI. About 3CAD$. After more yummy wedges and a few beers, I scouted out groups of people that seemed interesting. Sitting next to the pool I saw 4 guys hanging out drinking beer and talking about island adventures of getting wasted and getting 'involved' with wonderful young ladies. These are my guys!

"Cheers guys, my name is Jean!" We clicked instantly and sat by the pool most of the day before turning it to the beach. The rate of consumption stayed high all day as we shared traveling stories. Them mostly! Rob, had been traveling through South America and to tell you the truth, I don't remember many of Nick's. Other than the ones about them two on Beachcombers Island (party island) where they had met. He left early the next morning, so I never got a chance to to rebuild the puzzle. There was another guy, James, but we later found out he wasso full of shiat that it was hard to figure out what was true and what wasn't. We moved on to the variety store where we got long necks and drank more beer. There was a crew of about 10 of us. 24 long necks, 40 bucks worth of vodka waters and who knows how many stubbies later,I woke up in the pirate dorm in my boxerbriefs bitching about the f'ing lights and the noisy people... It was 7am.

BULA! Breaky time! I spent most of the day nursing a HORRIBLE hangover. I reluctantly avoided the mid afternoon pewk and forced myself to eat something other than potato wedges. The burger was good. More reading that day followed by a pretty nice Sushi dinner with Rob.
I spent the next day doing nothing. More beer, more reading and more meeting people. Rob and I also decided we would rent a car the nextday (I have no idea what day is which, just in what order they came in!) and go for a road trip. We also found couple that was interested in tagging along. We ended up drinking a healthy amount of beer for no particular reason other than being bored. I am making a point ofthis because that night I fell asleep in my door on my back. ( I have now switched dorms to the hostel next door because it is half price). The dorm is about 14 beds but with only 5-6 occupied that night. No tonly am I on my back but I wake up in the morning with my mouth wide open. There are only a few people in this world who can tell you about the level of snoring I reached that night and for once Lindsay wasn't trying to beat the day lights out of me to get me to shut up and roll over. I snored all night long and had a sore throat the rest of the week because of it. DAMN its nice to be on holidays!

We got up early the next morning and headed towards the airport to rent a car for our Totally Rad Fiji road trip. Long story short, renting a car in Fiji costs lots of money and no matter how much we tried to work them down we couldn't get anything cheaper than 70 bones a day+gas for the smallest Nissan car many of you in North America have NEVER seen!

After a little bargaining with a cabbie, the 4 of us were off to Natundula Beach. The 7th nicest beach in the world according to askmen.com. The beach was alright i guess. No Horseshoe thats for sure. The sand was coarse and littered with coral. It was also hightide, which meant we couldn't get to the coolest part of the beach because this lagoon was emptying into the pacific creating a pretty strong rip. Being well aware of my swimming ability, we decided tostay on this cool sandbar about 20 meters off the beach. The day wasover cast and cool, not a good day to be at the beach but we had a 6 pack of long necks and 3 hours with the cabbie to kill. This was the first time I had doubts about being in the Pacific. A few people from my hostel had come to this beach the day before and took pictures of a Sea Snake. I don't have my 'Don't Phuck With List' in front of me right now, but I am pretty sure those little fellas are up there. A Long neck later and who cared! The night ended up with more beer, some reading and 2 Canadian girls who were going to play rugby in new zealand. Super nice, but damn they looked tough! The smaller of the two was lean and didn't have much weight on her, like you would expect of a rugby player. But screw me running! She was a bouncer at some Toronto bar and was probably the toughest girl I've ever met. I also think she was a lesbian, but thats besides the point!

Other than that, the trip included a trip to the main part of Nadi town, where we were hastled by local shop keepers to buy shiat from them. I tried to force my self to by something but couldn't find anything I was crazy about. The highlight of the trip to town was finding out there was a rugby game between the local Nadi Jets vs. Australia's New South Wales Waratah's Jr. team. We sat on the hlll with all the other locals. Probably the only 4 white people on the hill. It was AWESOME! Waratahs won the game but the Jets made it interesting fighting until the end. Going to that game made us so much cooler in the eyes of all the local staff who were stuck working that night. Probing us for details and being super excited! We we rethe stuff!

On my last night I participated in a Kava ceremony with Tai and the Kavaholics. Kava is Fiji's national drink. It is a root that you grind up and mix with water. It numbs your mouth and if you can ingest enough it will give you a sort of body buzz. Kind of taste like river water, but there was a goal in mind and nothing was going to stop me. Basically the boys (Tai, Tequilla and I think the other was Jimmy) jam until the end of any given song when someone in the group yells TAKI! From my understanding it means 'drink up'. You tell Tai what size Kava cup you want, Tsunami, High Tide or Low Tide. Clap your hands once, Say BULA! drink up and clap your hands 3 more times. Everyone at the ceremony does the same and then the boys start jamming some more. Long story short we jammed till the weeee hours of the morning singing bob marley, jack johnson, their own compositions and many more. The buzz was heavy, but really, I was just stowked on the night I just had. Jamming with Tai and the Kavaholics until who knows when drinking dirty water and Fiji Beer! WHAT A NIGHT!

I've missed a whole bunch but I'm a few beers deep right now and thats all that comes to mind.
I ended up changing my flight from the 14th to the 8th as I got my work visa within 13 minutes of emailing the Australian government. Fiji can be very fun if you have deep pockets and you do many of the islands. I hardly had any pockets so my Fiji experiences went as far as the main island, 20 minutes from the airport!

The week concluded with me starting to drink my favorite beer, Fiji Gold at 830am. I convinced the bartender to give me happy hour prices as it was still breakfast time. I ran a 42$ tab by 12 and was drunk as a glass of water (Saltus physics joke!) by 11. Got some amazing wine at Duty Free and had a bottle as dinner with lindsay (while she had solid food).

The hunt for work begins. I will have some phone calls to make monday morning. Fingers crossed... its between watermelon picking, pool cleaning or just general work. There is also a local bike store that has shown some interest.

Who knows!?

Take care and talk Soon!

BULA!

Ozzie Air Force

So it's been a week or so since I last gave anybody any news. Other than mums who just had the big 25 late last week, I figured some of you may be getting worried about my moneyless, workless dilema.

Its been pretty low key for me around here, not wanting to spend more money than I have to. I have been reading a lot, finishing a book every few days. It's getting to the point where reading is beginning to cost me more money than I want to spend on pieces of paper. Thankfuly, Amazon.com delivers to this part of the world and I should be getting a healthy package that should last me a couple weeks. I usually enjoy supporting local business but they charge over 3x what amazon wants. And amazon includes the shipping to my door! Dont want to be expending too much energy! But bike stores are different so remember to support Winners Edge and All Seasons because their prices are always the lowest.

My riding has been a little lazy lately. Its been brutally hot and honestly im yet to find a good route. The only good route I've found includes the ascent of 2 'mountains'. The first is a 14% beast for 3-4 km and the other is a ondulating long climb. The problem with it is that:1. I am not the mountain goat I though I was 2. Everyuphill section has a grade of 10%+. Not much easier from the earlier climb. Anywho, its pretty depressing!

Yesturday (tuesday), I decided to get off my ass and go ride 70-80k. Checked out a website that shows routes that other people recommend. I found a good one that goes to the ocean and rides by it for a while. The roads looked like they were pretty quiet and it would be a plesant Bermuda like ride. Errror 1 - Getting to the coast with @$$face's directions took me along some of Brisbane's busiest roads, not to mention the number of red lights. Bikely.com, is used by newbies. DO NOT USE IT.

I was already on my way so I wasn't going to turn back. 25km of painful city riding. Getting to the coast was awesome. It was like the Grand Bend Strip for about 10-15km. I ended up overshooting my turn because I was enjoying the road so much. Quick turn around and I was back on my way. The directions took me through the back of the beachtown, which was quite nice but I had no idea of what was going to be around the next corner.

You might be interested to know it is 'Magpie Swooping Season" here. Magpies are these cool looking white and black birds. I remember shouting to Linds from the balcony "Whoa! Look at that cool ozzi bird" when i first got here. Well they weren't so cool anymore. I'd heard of horrifying stories where they things swoop form the trees and aim for your eyes and peck the $hit out of you but I was clearly better and cooler than the suckers who had been attacked.

So, I went around the round about and was heading down a faux downhill. In the small ring going a half decent click of about 45 (all info from my Polar computer graph). Out of nowhere I felt and heard something nipping the back of my helmet. What the flying PHUCK??!! It was this black and white bird, wings extended, trying to make road kill out of me. I've heard these things attack for the eyes, so wanting to keep my sexy eyes in my face I fumbled putting it in the big ring. Not to mention I love my new Polarised Radars (you tha man Kory). First dumping the derailleur all the way down(damn campy) and then finally hitting the big ring. For all those people I've told that dumping of the gears in the back end is useless, I lied. I went to my 11 in the matter of half a second and went as hard as I could in a FULL OUT SPRINT. Adrenaline feeding my muscles, I maxed out at 76 (polar) and averaged 66 for that what seemed like an eternity. The bugger didn't let up. And, I might mention, didn't have a problem keeping up. Chased me for just shy of a kilometer before I started swinging my arm backyards and scared him away. I stoped immidiatly, totally out of breath and straight up dead. Sucked back some gatorade and water and gathered my self. Realized I missed my turn because I was riding away from Ale Jet, I had to ride back towards the beast and hook a left.

He'll be gone or tired right?

Now riding a faux uphill, I scan the skies looking for this Death Eater. Not a bird in sight, I'm in the clear and laughing about the whole ordeal. 100 meters away from my turn, I see the bastard on a lamp post. Adrenaline rushes through my veins all over again, putting my gears in the big ring again. I set a good tempo and cut a car off turning left because I can see the thing jump off the lamp out of the corner of my eye. Meanwhile, the girl in the passenger seat is pointing and laughing at me being chased by this bird. Because swinging my arm worked last time, I am riding as hard as I can while swinging my left arm backyards wanting nothing more than smoking it and letting it get run over by the car now behind me. That didn't happen. When I could come close, the thing would ease up only to come swooping down faster. It did this 3-4 times over the space of another kilometer. Finally, after only bruising my ego, he let up and left me alone. I dont think I can even explain the state of exhaustion I was left in. Brutal. I just wanted to be in bed, under the covers away from any threat from anything. I still had another 30km ahead of me. 30km of open skies in a country that has most of the most dangerous animals in the world.

The ride took me through more busy roads and I was cursing the idiot who mapped out this ride. Busy roads and murderous birds. I wasn't happy. 3.5 hours for 80k. My heartrate didn't drop below 170 after the whole thing which is super high considering I couldn;t go faster than 25km/h!

Now im scrared as hell to go riding! Its one thing outriding a dog or something, but you can't see these bastards coming. A bunch of zipties to the helmet apparently does something. But I am too chicken to test out the theory right now!

I'm off to Fiji in a week to try and forget this traumatic experience.

And then I'll be a working man! Talk soon!
