Your Tongue Makes a Nice Snack?

Well the holidays are over, sorta, for me anyways!  Although I'm not too sure when they started either!  The big drive to Melbourne starts tomorrow.  The actual drive starts tuesday, but I'm gonna head down to Goldie a day early to hang and ride with Mr. Butterfield.  Hopefully the weather cleans up so that there is atleast one good thing about trying to hang in with Euro Legs!  Although I have a feeling rain and pain are on the forecast!   I bailed on today's ride.  The afternoon might clear up so I might knock back 80-100.  We'll see.  Thunderstorms and riding my sexy bike dont go well together.  She doesn't like it.  She told me so.

My Christmas day ride was pretty awesome.  We rode to RedCliffe (place with knarly thunderstorm pictures).  about 100kms.  Very little traffic and sunny skies!  It was pretty awesome.  We were pretty sure people were talking about us as we rode by them.  Either saying: " Wow how lucky they are to have no kids to do what ever they want this morning" or "Look at those ass hole cyclists, ditching their wives and kids to go 10 speeding".  SUCKAS!
We even found a bakery to knock back christmas snacks and coffee!  We had a false positive earlier on the ride, a cafe right on the beach who was setting up for a function.  I screamed in excitement and pulled an immediate u-ey only to find out he wasn't going to be able to satisfy our coffee and confectionary sugar needs.  The bakery that was open wasn't the greatest, but hey.  Beggars can't be choosers and she was probably the only open merchant within a 500km radius!

The week had about 350-400km on plan, but my lazyness and the shiatty weather knocked her back to 170!  Less than half!  Oh well!  We are planning to do the Melbourne drive in a single shot so its an extra day in Melbourne to do nothing but ride mi bicicletta.  Should be able to bang out 5-600kms depending on the NYE hangover.

Keeping my weight down is becoming a struggle.  Last night before bed I opened the cupboards and fridge dozens of times just to make sure some snacks weren't hiding from me.  I had 1 last piece of bread.  You know the part you usually throw away?!  Yeah, lathered in about 2-3 servings of Nutella and a huge class of full cream milk!  I still woke up at 4 for my ride hungry as hell.  My tongue seriously hurts.  I bit it good a few days ago and Im pretty sure I was chewing on it last night.

Anywho, time to head to work again and pack the car just incase Ty hammers my legs into the ground and I'm incapacitated for the drive day.  Imagine that! CRAMP! Sorry Mr. POPO officer.  I had a cramp, I know I doing 180 with 6 bikes on the roof but I couldn't pull the foot off the accelerator!

Happy New Year folks!

My Trans'!

My Honda CBF 250!  Been riding this baby around when I haven't been on the road bike.  Only exception is that we have a modified roller on the back for moto pacing!  The bike has a lot of power for pacing but its fuel injected which makes it much smoother.

Anywho! The Cricket is starting to bore me a little.  I'm gonna go for a cruise.  Might check some sales downtown.

Longest work day ever!

I know last year I was pulling crazy work hours between the catering and the occasional snow plowing but today was brutal!  Christmas eve in maggie land beat that pretty good.  Got to work a little early at about 830 and got working on bikes immediately.  Dozens of full builds later, its now 1045 at night and thankfully I don't have to drive to Quebec city!

Driving the girls and Marcel down to the airport at 330 and then riding at 6 for 150k or so.  Gotta fix some guy's derailleur at 2 in the afternoon as well!  He's not happy with something and we just tuned it.  Gear tune on christmas day?! NOW THATS F'ING SERVICE!

I'm absolutely beat.  I'm feeling my lack of sleep from a few days ago.  Supposed to go to a BBQ tomorrow but I reckon' that tomorrows ride is going to shatter me.  I wish I had spike and the James Bond Marathon right about now!

Prob lay naked on the couch with my christmas hat on.  I wrapped my self a Super Record 11 rear derailleur at work today to put under the christmas tree but I left it at work!  Maybe Pere Noel will swing by!  Or maybe I'll grab it at 3 so that it's there on my 2nd wake up of the day!

Anywho, over and out!  I need some rest!  Back at it in 4 hours!

These holidays are more stressful than working days!

Merry Christmas!

One day closer to christmas and Toowong, the suburb we are staying in is slowly emptying out.  There are dozens of people every morning at 430 with massive duffle bags and suitcases just outside one of the weirdly placed bus stops.  Obviously, the airport bus!

I had a horrible sleep last night.  Weird considering it was a super cool night.  slept about 45 mins but called it quits at 430 and went riding with the group.  Not the best considering the ride consisted of paceline work around the 'corso'.  I felt like a bag of hammers but it got me out of the house.

Today we have to build the new fleet of bikes for the girls.  Colnago CLX with 7900 and Dura Ace 1350 wheels.  5 bikes, 2 guys.  Super easy right.  We also have 2 complete services (service down to the frame) and a shop to run as the boss started his holidays back at the christmas party!  Today is gonna suck but it'll bring me 1 day closer to getting out of town to Melbourne!

Paul, I spoke with my boss about a group.  175 are currently not available in Magpie Land.  We had 1 of 5 groups a few weeks ago, and it was the first to be sold.  As soon as they are again we will get new pricing and I will let you know if you are still interested.  As for the tech.  I wouldn't trust the knobs that work at Shimano Australia.  From my experience with the stuff 7800 cassettes work with 7900 but I am unsure about the brakes.  I'd say no problem but its an expensive mistake!

Anywho, I'm gonna bang out a power nap.

Merry christmas everyone and a happy new year.

2009 MB Cycles/Coaching Mr March

The Nebo challenge was huge fun.  About 90 hit the hill at different with different time gaps to try to be named king/queen of the hill.  My group started off with 6 of us.  Julian, my regular riding partner went over the first 3 'bergs' with a strong tempo.  I let him go because he was hurting hard last thursday when we rode it while I was very comfortable.  I never caught him!   He caught 2 rabbits and worked hard to beat them.  He ended up putting 2 minutes on me.  Him and all of his 95 kilos!  Just as a reference point, I was 78 saturday morning!  I still rode a strong 45.30 and in my defence, I am not quite familiar with the hill yet!  I only got caught by 1 person, a strong up and coming junior with about 2 kms to go.  As we passed me just before the final descent he shouted, "THEY'RE COMING!!!!!!" as if the big bad aliens from Mars were on their way!  The big boys were closing in but a final adrenaline kick kept them at bay! All that magpie training!  The pro from the US banged out a 37.11, a course record.

Work was pretty laid back, spent most of the day clearing out the shop for the christmas party.
I was pretty beat and wouldn't have wanted/been able to do much more!

The christmas party was awesome.  Had a ridiculous amount of booze and great food!  There were also some fun awards.  The release of a MB Calendar.  I ended up being Mr March!  I wasn't listening to what was going on, just heard my name after a little speech.  I heard things like begging for a job, and foreign invasion (there are 'heaps' of North Americans here at the moment).  I got to wear a little tiara all night!  The rest of the night ended up with going downtown but me and only me getting refused entry at ALL the bars because I was too intoxicated!  I still have no idea how the bouncer could tell.    I was pretty sideways, but so were all the others I was with.  Oh well.

Doing some construction work today for a friend.  Waiting for a bin to get delivered before I go slave in the heat at mid day!  I'm pretty sure I'm working too much for a guy who should be on 'holidays' but otherwise I just end up drinking coffee and doing nothing!

Nebo Challenge

Tomorrow is the semi annual Mt. Nebo Challenge.  It's set up as a handicap race which keeps it interesting for all of our clients.  There are 70 odd entries and there is a 35 minute handicap between first and last over 18kms.

Should be fun, picked up some race wheels for the event.  More of a publicity/advertising thing for the boss than any actual advantage but I am not complaining.  Set of Zipp 404 tubs.  They were fast on the way home!  The last guy, a strong US pro, reckons (my new Ozzie language) he can bang out 36 minutes if he is feeling good.  I rode it with a friend of mine thursday and rode 52 minute cruising.  I'll be happy going 45 minutes.  If the weather is good the sub 40 guys might catch me early giving me a chance to tempo the hill so who knows!

Its gonna be an awesome day.  Christmas Party tomorrow night with over 150 rsvps.  No ride sunday but my kms will be over 300 after tomorrow.  A good week in my books.

Talk soon!

Kangaroo Sightings - 1.5

Cronulla ended up rocking.  The girls raced AWESOME.  Gina got it all prep'ed, wrapped and handed it to Kirsty on a silver platter.  The team controlled the whole race from the gun and got the win they deserved.  I got on National TV a buncha times.  Yeah, I'm pretty cool.  I was in the pits and my good looks just draw tv time.  What can I say!

We had some 'Champers' at lunch and got going back to Brissie by 330.  11 hours later, we were back home.  We took the more straight forward route home that didn't include the winding roads.  A little longer in distance but the highway roads were much more relaxing to drive.

Yeah, back home, back at work tomorrow.  It's hot as tits out so I'm gonna go hang out in the mall!

Bike Mechanish - Job Explained

Got here in Cronulla early evening yesturday. The driving was only 800km but our wonderful Garmin took us through some CRAZY roads! The street signs said to continue on HWY 15, Mr. Garmin was saying Hook Left. Hooked left we did! Ondulating, Winding farmer roads at 110 km/h with 8bikes on the roof and a Minivan full of shiat! It was pretty sick. Woulda been a different story on a 1000cc Yamaha! We somehow made it to the Pacific Hwy after flirting with death most of the day with about $100,000 worth of gear strapped to the car! Oh yeah, it was also PISSING rain the whole time, which also made the flirting more intense!

Went for a ride to the course this morning after picking up the girls. Cronulla is a rad little beach suburb. Awesome surf, babes everywhere and coffee! Good morning!

Cleaned the bikes this afternoon after realizing the Bike stand I brought down was broken and useless! OOPS! Boss shows up tonight and hopefully we wont have a legitemate excuse to use the stand tomorrow! I knew I shoulda checked it out before! Also his fault for putting it with all the travel gear!

Anywho, race is tomorrow. We dragged a piss load of gear down for a 35 minute Crit. Thats their National Champs! I'm not complaining but my boss must really love his girls and their racing! He's spending a ton of money this weekend!

My internet time is up and we'll be heading to dinner soon.

Talk soon

Tough Being Awesome

Went into work today after taking saturday off to hang with the wife unit before she left.  Wasn't sure what to expect as we don't usually pull wrench on mondays.  After doing the few repairs there were to be done, Marcel, my boss, called me into his office to inform me that I would be traveling to Cronulla.  Driving the workshop down to the National Criterium Championships.  HELLS YEAH!   Do I have to??!  Ok.... If I must!

The rest of the day consisted of me preparing the 6 sets of Zipps and getting 2 Pinarello's ready for our two guest riders.  Gina Grain, Canadian National champ, and some other chick who normally rides for Webcor.

I also sat through another awesome wind training session!

And inbetween doing all that, I was generally being Mr. Amazing to all the clients.  They all love the fact that I am from somewhere else!

So yeah!  Off to Cronulla, which is 30 minutes from Sydney.  Might get a chance to call Robbie McEwen a short little shit! or something of the sort!

Anywho, my week started off awesome.  Hows the snow?!

Canada 2 - Ozz -1

It's HOT has tits right now.  Summer has hit with all its fury.  The current readings off of my Ipod read 29 feels like 40 with humidity.  I'm sucking back my favoritre Miller Chills as fast as I can.  I just made some pesto and I'm trying all sorts of things to make it cooler.  Next step is to strip my Pepper Mint plant from the patio and add that to it.  I'll let you know!

Anywho, Linds leaves for Canada tomorrow morning.  I'm off to Redcliff and Nudgee Beach on a 130km loop.  The plan is to bang out about 40km of pace lining, but last time we did that it turned out to be a shiat show race shelling anyone who wasn't prepared to go into serious hurt mode.  I did my part by pacing 'important' clients to the stop off point!  No. 1 Domestic baby!

Anywho, I hope it isn't snowing too bad.  But then again, you can shelter your self from the cold, but this heat is EVERYWHERE!  But my tan lines are still kicking ass!  Got tanning lights set up in the velodrome yet!? MUAHAHA!

Country Comparisons

I've been here for over 3 months now and I figured I'd do a little comparison between countries.  Honestly I'm just bored and trying to find something to do before my 9pm bed time.  Riding in the morning, need my beauty sleep!

Storms
Canada - City shutting blizzards
Australia - City Destroying Thunderstorms

Advantage Canada - What can I say?  I love shoveling and being 'that guy' with the clean driveway mid snow storm!

Holiday fruit
Canada - Cranberries I guess.
Australia - Cherries

Advantage Australia - Who doesn't like cherries???  Snacking on some right now suckas!

Riding

Canada - Indoor over half the year
Australia - packs of thousands every weekend

Deuce - it's a good switch up and getting fat playing video games is pretty awesome!

Tied score for now

Canada - 1 Australia - 1

Official Start of Summer

Well this is it folks.  Summer has begun in Ozz.  How's that Slop in Canada right about now?!  Man I don't miss riding to work in slush just to drink a cold starbucks!  Its about a million degrees here today with no letting up in sight.  Im sweating sitting here bloggin' and lets say I'm not wearing too much.

Yesturday's 2 hundo was a monster.  Not only were the km's mega but so were the hills!  Unfortunately for me our group of about 20 mostly consisted of 'elite' guys.  The pace was fast and the tempo up the 'easy' climbs was tough.  The first easy climb of the day was Beerumbum or something like that.  about 5km 4%.  I was 3rd wheel and people were talking all around me as I tried to stay focused on the wheel ahead of me.  Heart rate was maxed at 198 whilst other chit chated but I had to look tough, we were only 80km's in and had to look like I was good for 120 more!  From there we made our way to Woodford where we made our 2nd pit stop for the day.  The fear of Mt Mee was beginning to set in.  Because we were approaching from woodford, it would mean we would attack the backside of the hill.  The Dark Side!

She started off at an easy 8-10%  at the 120km mark for about a km before cresting.  Kind of like a tease, making me think, bah, this isn't that bad, what are these softies talking about?  Not that this is the easiest climb I've done, but I could bang this baby out no problemo!

After another tough roller, a sign pops out.  WARNING! CRASH AREA!  And then another one Mt Mee Tourist Drive 3.87km 15.67%.  WHOA NOW!  I look down at my cycling computer and the sign isn't lying.  The hill lingering between 14-16 and then 17-18 in the switchbacks.  I had to switch screens as to not get too depressed!  It was a big hard hill, but like the others, I found a good tempo and made it to the top.  The boys kept a good tempo through the rest of the Mt Mee Range which brought us to a good decent all the way to Dayboro.  If you look at the map, there are actually HUGE rolling hills between Mt Mee and Dayboro.  The steep climb is only the first part!

Mt Samson wasn't as bad as I thought.  Long but easy climbing.  Total Ascent for the day was 1900 meters and 200.4km.  Actually had to go around the block once to make sure I broke 200km!  Not like last time, 199.3.

Anywho, time to go sprawl naked on the bed to try and keep cool.  Man it's hot!

Later!

Lactate Results: "You're Really Unfit Eh!"

So I banged out a Lactate test thursday morning before work.  Well holy smokes, what a reality check!

I've been riding somewhat regularly since starting working at the shop.  Atleast 3x a week with my milage increasing by the week.  I wasn't expecting an awesome test as I was off the bike for a while because of the maggies and Fiji but I was hoping that some sort of Natural Talent would come through and save me of any embarrassment in front of my new boss!  But lets get real!  I haven't trained properly since June/July '03!

The test started good with my lactate levels being within very good range at 100 watt resistance.  And again at 150 watt resistance and again at 200 watt resistance.  But then we hit the + button which knocked the resistance to 250.  HELLO!  Something is happening here!  My legs are starting to hurt and my breathing starting to get audible!  Bam! 300 hits and within a minute I am blowing out of all holes crying like a little girl while my boss tells me to hold it for another 4 minutes.  Somehow find a way to finish the step while keeping my cadence up.  The last minute was the most excruciating thing ever.  I was shaky most of the morning after that effort!  After reviewing my results the first words out of my boss' mouth were 'You're really unfit eh!' with a worried tone on his face!  He explained to me that I basically missed an entire step in my lactate production.  Indicative of someone who has been off the bike for a very long time!  Not to bore you totally, but my levels went form 2.8 units straight to 7.8 units.  Someone with talent or in shape would of had a 3-4 in between!

But hey! gotta start somewhere and right now its weight loss time.  And thats going awesome.  Jeans no longer fit and I've kissed the 180lbs mark good bye.

Tomorrow is a 200k day with a massive hill at 150 and 'Samford Range' @ 180.

Oh yeah.  Not sure if I mentioned this yet, but I will not be going to the TDU to see Lance as it doesn't work logistically for my boss.  I will, however, be going to Tasmania and Melbourne for some Lady Racing as team wrench over the holidays.  Much easier work!  BOO YAH!

Monday, November 24, 2008

Mother nature has calmed down a little since my last posting.  I still have a roof over my head and a building I can call work to pay my bills.

Speaking of work, if anyone out there is considering some new bike toys, Dura Ace 7900 is pretty awesome.  We got 3 of the first 10 groups in Maggie Land and already sold both.  I am proud to have installed the new group my self.  Tuned awesome and felt even better.  Oh yeah, I also had to go for my morning pewk between setting up the shifters and and wiring the babe up.  I hope the gears shifted ok!

It was a long night with the Boss for the 'Boys Christmas Dinner'.  Oysters, outrageously expensive bottles of wine and a bottle of equally expensive Bourbon.  Man did we feel awesome in the morning!

The week on the bike was reasonable.  All the storms made it easy for me to call off my rides in the morning and stay in bed.  Fortunately, a big ride on Sunday brought the numbers back up.  Rode up the Gold Coast to this awesome yacht Marina.  30 of us got going on a century ride.  Some little coffee shop opened just for us (our clients anywho) and  I paid way too much for coffee and raisin toasts.  YIPPI!  Had a cross/tail wind getting there which was nice but the afternoon brought some pretty nasty cross wind gusts in some less protected sections.  The weather was great other than the wind, a very mild 22-25.

The Tan lines are back!  Riding tomorrow and then a Lactate Test with the boss on Thursday morning before work.  A huge 200km ride this sunday.  We'll see how I fare without my usual Sustained Energy supplements but if the legs feel like the Gold coast ride, I should be alright.

Linds and I drove down to Surfers today.  Just a few Kms from where I was yesturday at Runaway Bay.  Not a huge fan of the place.  Jock capital of the world.  But Linds wanted some beach time.  Had a good day despite the wind on the beach later in the afternoon.  Had a few beers, walked around and had a quick bite to eat at this little place just off the strip.

This week we have the 'Everybody Christmas Dinner'.  Probably be similar to the 'Boys Christmas' dinner.  Although, I hope the bottle of Bourbon stays out of the game.

Anywho, it's bed time.  Riding at 530 tomorrow

Le Ciel Qui Nous Tombes sur la Tete

I was crossing this bridge 36hours before!

Call it bad luck or just a coincidink, but I, or mother Earth anywho, have managed to cost pop and prob Lindsay's pop for that mater some more money!

If you haven't heard.  Brisbane has been getting hit with the worst storms since the 80's.  There are a couple shots including one of Redcliff where I was on saturday, the day before the knarly storms started.  Crazy waves of thunder storms and the skies opening up and dumping more water than any of the drought affected areas could handle.  Queensland was in a huge drought problem before sunday.  The government launched a pretty controversial water recycling problem which would recycle water from piss and poop and put it back into the water reservoirs.  MMMM....

But now the program is being re thought because the dams went from being bellow 30% to nearly 100% in the last 4 days!   Some areas have received well over 300mm of rain the last 4 days and most of that volume coming in short burst in the evenings.  As much as 210mm hitting Ipsisch last night (30 minutes south).  Tonight will only bring more, as the first squall has already come through.  Rain going sideways so fast it looks like a snow storm.  Mt Coot Tha, which normally stands tall to our west was completly erased as this fast cloud made it's way through tonight.  The clouds glowed purple and red every few seconds and the rumble was loud and deep.

The Sunday brought a color in the sky I have never seen before.  Best described by a forest green as the sun was being bullied down by the emerging clouds.  Anywho, the destruction around has been pretty big.  The hardest hit being a suburb called The Gap, a mere 30 minute bike ride to the north.  Insurance claims are around 100million as of today but are expected to reach 2-250.

Bermuda's got hurricanes
Canada Snow Storms
Ozzie's got storms of lightning bolts hunting people down from the skies!  I thought the maggies were bad!

Just Another Week

Another week bites the dust with much of the same daily rituals.  Ride, work, Sleep.  And drink lots of coffee in between!

This week was a good for the bike.  The shop had a memorial ride for one of their riders who passed away a couple years ago.  A turnout of 100+ riders to ride the 'River Loop'.  I ended up riding at the tail end of the group to help push slower people up hills or pacing them back to the group.  Average speed was horrible but it was a good ride.  Police escort and everything.

Had another good ride with the 'fast group' on saturday.  We rode 105km in just under 3 hours.  We got to Red Cliff, a beautiful harbour/marina town 70k out in under 2 hours.  I did my best to contribute to the group's average speed but after a 10minute pull on the front trying to look as if I could be doing this in my sleep, I was quite happy taking in the scenery from the back, which was very comfortable considering our group was about 20 people and we were riding 2 abreast.  The rest of the day sucked.  I got in 10 minutes before work and had piles of '09 bikes to build for test rides that afternoon!  My legs still hurt on Sunday!

On a different note.  The Rugby World Cup Semi's were just this past saturday!  We had AWESOME seats.  Inbetween the uprights on the south side of the stadium.  They weren't 50yard line seats but they were pretty good.  About 20 rows up form the field.  We actually made it on tv at the end of the night during the interviews.  The game was pretty tight with New Zealand beating England in the end.  Thankfully it wasn't the Australia vs/ Fiji game which ended up in a 54-0 blow out.  We def. got our money's worth.  The beer was terrible but the prices were much better than I had anticipated.

Anywho, thats about it from here.  Officially going into saving money mode for Thailand.  It's still several months away but I'm sure it will come by super quick with the holidays being just around the corner.

Later!

Thai Lady Boys and Dirty Titanium Clawed Fighting Cocks

MAN THESE GUYS ARE HOT!  No really!  They are dudes!

It's official.  Linds and I will have a stamp from Thailand in our passports in 2009!  Too bad my passport will expire soon after and my fancy stamps will be lost in a drawer somewhere!  But lets worry about that in December '09!

The other super amazing part to the Thai trip is that we managed to push it back far enough to give me a chance to be Mechanish/Ride Guide at the TDU 2009 for the MB coaching trip.  I hope Ted V. is a regular reader of my blog!  Just incase he has forgotten about my interest in giving him a helping hand.  I will now have experience!  Long story short, I expressed interest in assisting him and his crew to ride the Tour de Swiss 2009.  It's a long shot being half way across the world, but who wouldn't want to have this guy riding/working with them in switzerland?  I love Raclette!

My boss had the other Machanish in mind because my travel dates were supposed to be earlier, but apparently it is lots of hard work out there and since all the big shot clients are at the TDU the shop is virtually dead.  But a full weeks wages+all expenses paid to watch Fancy Pants Lance race, clean a few bikes and ride 100+k daily.  I'll have suffer through it... I guess...

Anywho, now that most of you feel better about your lives because I have it quite hard Down Under, no pun intended, I will outline a short itinerary.

Day 1-45.  Rent 125cc motor bike.  Listen to Indiana jones tune on Ipod (without helmet ofcourse) while speeding through the jungle.  Avoid Thai ParaMilataries with machineguns and grenades.  Wheelie through danger and return ancient artifacts to Bangkok Museum of Archeology.
Day 46. Return to Australia.

But if I manage to get all that done within a few days because my Bermuda Scooter riding skillz make me too fast for the local bad mons, the plan should be as follows.

Lindsay to hangout for 18 days while we do the beaches and islands in the southern regions.  Linds plans on getting her Open Water PADI beforehand so we can explore some of the under water treasures.  Once we've had enough relaxing I imagine we will venture north and soak up some culture while we try to avoid lady boys!

Day 18 Linds leaves, I venture further North.  I hear sleeping in the tribal villages is pretty cool.  Might travel down the Mekong River for a little, while heading east.  If the funds are looking good, I might take a peek down in Cambodia for a few days.

I will post a detailed Itinerary once I've checked out my Lonely Planet Guide and reviewed a list of missing artifacts.

Anywho, thats about it for now.  And oh...  the other cool thing about thailand is the exchange rate.  For the first time in my life I will have some good coin to my name.  I plan on spending, oh you know.. hundred thou or so.  Give or take 10-20,000.   Pff.. Chump change! BALLLLLIN'!

A millionaire in my own mind!

Mt Nebo - My Arch Nemesis

Jacaranda Trees

View from Mt. Nebo

I sent out an update about Mt Nebo before I started blogging so for you who hadn't previously heard about this hill is a mean one!

Last week was good for me on the bike.  Getting up at 5am 3x and totaling just over 200k.  Considering I have a job now, it's not too bad.  I've been riding with the other mechanish from work.  He rides most mornings and now he's got me racing next saturday.  Who ever places better doesn't have to buy coffee!  I'm just worried about getting dropped!   Apparently the race scene in Brissy isn't all that hot so I'm hoping 'Elite' doesn't kick my arse too bad!  It's hard to believe when you see hundreds of people riding any day of the week before 6am!

Anywho!  My ride to Nebo was a much different experience this time.  I was riding with Julian (Mechanish) and his older buddy Peter (Former Masters Pursuit World Champ)  Yeah no biggie.  The guy had the rainbow jersey on his shoulders a little while ago.  He was no Hopkins but fack could he go up hill!

We went up Nebo through this 'Goat Track'.  Apparently you can see goats but I was too busy taking in the breathtaking views of the city to my left or remembering to keep my legs moving and heart beating.  5km of BRUTAL climbing on this dirt road that hadn't seen any type of upkeep in eons!  Dancing on the pedals was not an option as you would just lose traction.  The total ascent for the day was just shy of 1200m over 65km.  Hard day in the saddle!

Fortunately, it is blooming season for the Jacaranda tree.  As you can see, it is a huge tree with purple flowers.  The coolest part is the smell of the flowers in the morning.  You can smell the trees hundreds of meters away and because Brisbane has one of the highest concentration of these trees in Queensland, you can smell them all the time!

Anywho! Until Next time!

RLWC08 - SEMI FINAL TICKETS!!!

Who's got two thumbs and also has Rubgy League World Cup Tickets?!  THIS GUY!!!  Well I don't have them yet, but I will by the time most of you lot wake up and read this!

If you are wondering WTF is Rugby League.  Well its kind of like rugby.... but different!  Each team is allowed 5 'touches' or something.  It's pretty huge in Australia with a professional league and apparently it is also played in other countries.  Haha! you learn about new sports everyday!  I don't know the rules but what I do know is that there are 10 of the drunkess nations down for the event.  Canada not making the cut somehow, I will have to root for my Football Boys!  ALLEZ LES BLEU!!!!  La France Mes Cris de Batard!  I will bring a bottle of wine and stiff french baguette just incase the irish want to get rowdy.

Anywho, it's an excellent opportunity to hang out with a bunch of people from all over and get absolutely ripped!  Not to mention the 22 guys on the field pretending to be Mac trucks running into the opposing team!

Lindsay is sorting her side of the story out.  She thinks going to some island with her school friends will be cooler.  Comments are strongly encouraged.  Don't hold back!  Let her know she would be making a pretty decent mistake!

Hey 'Dell!  Think you can hook me up with another Jersey!?  The Football boys really messed up at the Euro this summer, but I have a good feeling about my frogs this time!

Maccas: It's like McD's but fancier

I had been eyeing the local Maccas up since I got here.  It was tough to indulge with all the little local eateries but after an awesome 80k on the bike this morning, I gave in.  But it was totally ok because at Maccas in Australia they serve up your 1/4 pounder with avocado.  I understand they are slapping on more green fat but did you know avocados are the good fat?  Super thoughtful!  I got my usual fries and and chocolate shake, which tasted like cold nothing.  I actually had been pretty excited about the shake considering their milk taste so good.  It's fresh milk.  Not quite homo but way gayer than 2%!  Amazing!  In the end, I wasn't that impressed with my meal.  Let's just say those kids at Wharncliff and Oxford know what they are doing.

I made it through my first week of work.  I must say the shop is much different than anything else I've seen or worked in.  The week consisted of fancy bikes and wheels every day while watching music videos on 1 of the 4-5 plasmas in the shop.  Marcel (my boss) also holds wind trainning sessions on thursday afternoons.  Well let me tell you!  The sights were great!  I will make sure to have my hands clean by 1pm next week just incase any MILF's need a hand in setting up their bikes.

Well the week has been pretty low key, getting up at 730 everyday.  Most of you will be surprised to hear, I have been showering and shaving everyday!  Work days anywho!  It's pretty weird but I feel like some parts of me are growing up!

I give it another week before the old 4-5 day beard starts showing up at work!  But lets keep the thoughts positive for now!

Making use of that Visa

Some of you may have already heard the big news. I am working! Not doing the fruit thing, I am back where I first began. The womb of my working life. Le magazin de Velo! Surprise, Surprise! I know I said I've been done with retail but this shop is a little different. Hmm.. A lot actually!

As you walk through the two massive front doors, your eyes can't help but notice the beautiful sexy curves of all the carbon bikes. Full line ups from manufacturers like Orbea, Willer, and my personal soft spot, Pinarello. The Prince of Spain hanging on one wall amongst a couple dozen other top notch frames. To translate this last statement into 'non Style-Man' lingo: I waited about 8 months to get my blue Pinarello Prince in 2001. It was also the wrong color. This guy landed the frame size and color he wanted with the snap of his fingers. It's a pretty sexy frame, but he's only putting Record on it. Cheaping out if you ask me. That babe should outfitted out with the SUPAH RECORD! He bought his group before consulting Style Man. He will learn.
The cheapest bike in the store is an Argon 18 with Ultegra at about 1500 bones but the bulk of the bikes range from the mid 3000's to top models like Dogma's and Orca's priced well over 10. Its a very exclusive Concept Road store. The reason this store works for me. No wankers asking for deals on $329 mtn bikes.

My first 2 days consisted of wrenching on the team bikes. Pinarello's with D/A. To keep it simple and interesting for people who aren't familiar with cycling gear, all I really did all day is work on $4-5000 bikes. Not a bad first day.

The shop is also a massive coaching center with testing and altitude training available on site. There are daily shop rides starting at 5am. I went on Saturday with the intermediate group on a ride that would take us through a short easy climb and several long rolling sections. Well let me tell you! After being off the bike for just over 3 weeks, partly because of the magpies but mostly because of Fiji, I found some mountain goat legs I thought I left behind in 2003! My weight has consistently been at or bellow 178lbs but my riding has been very irregular in the last month.

Anywho, so far so good. I am hoping I can find that urge to race again after 4-5 years of injury and lazyness. My back/hip/knee problems seem to be under some control so it could be a good time to get back on the saddle!

There is a 'Groove and Wine' festival today in the park. Free wine and tunes!? Yup, we're there! Wit mon French accent, I will see wat le vin Ausralian taste like!

A Plus Tard!

Lost in the Pacific with Lots of Beer

So life has been tough recently. I spent all of September being unemployed and began the month of October in much the same way. Only October began on a flight to Nadi (pr. 'Nan' 'de') on the main Island of the Fiji Islands. It's tough, but someone has to do it. In any case,I had to atleast attempt to rectify my immigration record. Between Bermuda and my first attempt in Australia, I was 0-2. Ladies andGents, I am pleased to announce I am finally LEGALLY able to work in a foreign country. Something many of you probably assumed would never happen! There is faith in me somewhere out there!

Bermudian work permit next?! Who am I kidding?!

My week (was supposed to be 2 weeks but more on that later) on thePacific rock began on Oct. 1. A 3 hour flight and 2 hour time difference, I was now waiting for my bus at the hostel pickup corner at the airport with nothing more than my new AK Ski pack (thanks Evand Nate). Backpackers and uni students on school break slowly poured out of the arrival hall and joined me on my cramped little couch.

BULA!!! (hello in Fijian)

YES!! I am going to love this place! A foreign language so easy toLearn!? BULA! BULA! BULA! We are off on the bus and head towards the hostel. The shuttle has a different name from the hostel I am staying at, but the name of the beach is the same. We drive across the 2nd largest city of Fiji and I am amazed of the scenery. The city isnothing more than 1 street (on that side anyways) but the picturesque backdrop is breathtaking. Massive hills everywhere just in the middle of nowhere. The streets are rough and the area is pretty poor but the local businesses look to be relatively busy. Kids hang out justoutside the new Digicel shop, probably listening out for other people stylish ringtones! We hook a right and arrive at the hostel, not mine!

Get off the bus and ask the driver if he is continuing on to Smugglers Cove, my home for the next 3 nights. Unfortunately, I got on the wrong shuttle, but another is on its way to get me and I am told to hang out at the current hostel until it arrives.

Bula! Nadi Bay hostel! The driver tells me it shouldn't be more than 20 minutes. It didn't make a difference to me. I knew no one and had nothing better do anyways! 20 minutes in Fiji time was more like40-50 minutes! Nothing out of the ordinary really, so off to Smugglers we go!

I check into the hostel and get my passcard for my Pirate Dorm at a rate of 30FIJI$ a night. Pirate Dorm... my imagination runs wild as to what could be going on behind those closed doors. Sails, ropecourse, canons and copious amounts of smoke, rum and swords? Nearly all that, but really it was 36 bunks arranged in cubicles of 4. There wasn't much personal space but who cares! I was in Fiji! My firstday was pretty boring. Had 4-5 beers and these gross potato wedges as to try and not spend too much. Hung out with these english boys who were off the next day but we drank and chatted about what there was to do on the islands for a few hours.
The Fiji main island is a gateway to all the other islands. Land hereand go to other islands that offer things that you want to do and onlyhead back to the main island when you are ready to head back home, or if you need need time to sober up before heading to another island. Make sense? Anywho, I was Off to the pirate dorm pretty early to read this amazing book I picked up about this english boy who gets screwed by Russia, Zone 22 by Tig Hague. 5 stars, highly recommended.

I got woken up a few times during the night as drunk people comestumbling to find their beds. But all'n'all I had a good night sleep. Took advantage of my free breakfast and coffee and headed to the Smugglers beach just in our backyard. The hostels set up was sweet. Nice big deck, sweet pool and a cool Fijian Hut (forget the name!) and then, ofcourse, the beach with hammocks, and loads of chairs. I spent most of the morning reading on the beach soaking up the sun. Took a sea kayak out for a little burn but the strong wind made it tough. A quick email to the Australian government to get my Visa game going and it was time to have another local brew.

After stimulating my mind and exercising all morning it was time to get my game face on. Fijian beer isn't the hottest, but it comes in these rad little 'stuby' bottles. That and it is also 4 bucks FIJI. About 3CAD$. After more yummy wedges and a few beers, I scouted out groups of people that seemed interesting. Sitting next to the pool I saw 4 guys hanging out drinking beer and talking about island adventures of getting wasted and getting 'involved' with wonderful young ladies. These are my guys!

"Cheers guys, my name is Jean!" We clicked instantly and sat by the pool most of the day before turning it to the beach. The rate of consumption stayed high all day as we shared traveling stories. Them mostly! Rob, had been traveling through South America and to tell you the truth, I don't remember many of Nick's. Other than the ones about them two on Beachcombers Island (party island) where they had met. He left early the next morning, so I never got a chance to to rebuild the puzzle. There was another guy, James, but we later found out he wasso full of shiat that it was hard to figure out what was true and what wasn't. We moved on to the variety store where we got long necks and drank more beer. There was a crew of about 10 of us. 24 long necks, 40 bucks worth of vodka waters and who knows how many stubbies later,I woke up in the pirate dorm in my boxerbriefs bitching about the f'ing lights and the noisy people... It was 7am.

BULA! Breaky time! I spent most of the day nursing a HORRIBLE hangover. I reluctantly avoided the mid afternoon pewk and forced myself to eat something other than potato wedges. The burger was good. More reading that day followed by a pretty nice Sushi dinner with Rob.
I spent the next day doing nothing. More beer, more reading and more meeting people. Rob and I also decided we would rent a car the nextday (I have no idea what day is which, just in what order they came in!) and go for a road trip. We also found couple that was interested in tagging along. We ended up drinking a healthy amount of beer for no particular reason other than being bored. I am making a point ofthis because that night I fell asleep in my door on my back. ( I have now switched dorms to the hostel next door because it is half price). The dorm is about 14 beds but with only 5-6 occupied that night. No tonly am I on my back but I wake up in the morning with my mouth wide open. There are only a few people in this world who can tell you about the level of snoring I reached that night and for once Lindsay wasn't trying to beat the day lights out of me to get me to shut up and roll over. I snored all night long and had a sore throat the rest of the week because of it. DAMN its nice to be on holidays!

We got up early the next morning and headed towards the airport to rent a car for our Totally Rad Fiji road trip. Long story short, renting a car in Fiji costs lots of money and no matter how much we tried to work them down we couldn't get anything cheaper than 70 bones a day+gas for the smallest Nissan car many of you in North America have NEVER seen!

After a little bargaining with a cabbie, the 4 of us were off to Natundula Beach. The 7th nicest beach in the world according to askmen.com. The beach was alright i guess. No Horseshoe thats for sure. The sand was coarse and littered with coral. It was also hightide, which meant we couldn't get to the coolest part of the beach because this lagoon was emptying into the pacific creating a pretty strong rip. Being well aware of my swimming ability, we decided tostay on this cool sandbar about 20 meters off the beach. The day wasover cast and cool, not a good day to be at the beach but we had a 6 pack of long necks and 3 hours with the cabbie to kill. This was the first time I had doubts about being in the Pacific. A few people from my hostel had come to this beach the day before and took pictures of a Sea Snake. I don't have my 'Don't Phuck With List' in front of me right now, but I am pretty sure those little fellas are up there. A Long neck later and who cared! The night ended up with more beer, some reading and 2 Canadian girls who were going to play rugby in new zealand. Super nice, but damn they looked tough! The smaller of the two was lean and didn't have much weight on her, like you would expect of a rugby player. But screw me running! She was a bouncer at some Toronto bar and was probably the toughest girl I've ever met. I also think she was a lesbian, but thats besides the point!

Other than that, the trip included a trip to the main part of Nadi town, where we were hastled by local shop keepers to buy shiat from them. I tried to force my self to by something but couldn't find anything I was crazy about. The highlight of the trip to town was finding out there was a rugby game between the local Nadi Jets vs. Australia's New South Wales Waratah's Jr. team. We sat on the hlll with all the other locals. Probably the only 4 white people on the hill. It was AWESOME! Waratahs won the game but the Jets made it interesting fighting until the end. Going to that game made us so much cooler in the eyes of all the local staff who were stuck working that night. Probing us for details and being super excited! We we rethe stuff!

On my last night I participated in a Kava ceremony with Tai and the Kavaholics. Kava is Fiji's national drink. It is a root that you grind up and mix with water. It numbs your mouth and if you can ingest enough it will give you a sort of body buzz. Kind of taste like river water, but there was a goal in mind and nothing was going to stop me. Basically the boys (Tai, Tequilla and I think the other was Jimmy) jam until the end of any given song when someone in the group yells TAKI! From my understanding it means 'drink up'. You tell Tai what size Kava cup you want, Tsunami, High Tide or Low Tide. Clap your hands once, Say BULA! drink up and clap your hands 3 more times. Everyone at the ceremony does the same and then the boys start jamming some more. Long story short we jammed till the weeee hours of the morning singing bob marley, jack johnson, their own compositions and many more. The buzz was heavy, but really, I was just stowked on the night I just had. Jamming with Tai and the Kavaholics until who knows when drinking dirty water and Fiji Beer! WHAT A NIGHT!

I've missed a whole bunch but I'm a few beers deep right now and thats all that comes to mind.
I ended up changing my flight from the 14th to the 8th as I got my work visa within 13 minutes of emailing the Australian government. Fiji can be very fun if you have deep pockets and you do many of the islands. I hardly had any pockets so my Fiji experiences went as far as the main island, 20 minutes from the airport!

The week concluded with me starting to drink my favorite beer, Fiji Gold at 830am. I convinced the bartender to give me happy hour prices as it was still breakfast time. I ran a 42$ tab by 12 and was drunk as a glass of water (Saltus physics joke!) by 11. Got some amazing wine at Duty Free and had a bottle as dinner with lindsay (while she had solid food).

The hunt for work begins. I will have some phone calls to make monday morning. Fingers crossed... its between watermelon picking, pool cleaning or just general work. There is also a local bike store that has shown some interest.

Who knows!?

Take care and talk Soon!

BULA!

Ozzie Air Force

So it's been a week or so since I last gave anybody any news. Other than mums who just had the big 25 late last week, I figured some of you may be getting worried about my moneyless, workless dilema.

Its been pretty low key for me around here, not wanting to spend more money than I have to. I have been reading a lot, finishing a book every few days. It's getting to the point where reading is beginning to cost me more money than I want to spend on pieces of paper. Thankfuly, Amazon.com delivers to this part of the world and I should be getting a healthy package that should last me a couple weeks. I usually enjoy supporting local business but they charge over 3x what amazon wants. And amazon includes the shipping to my door! Dont want to be expending too much energy! But bike stores are different so remember to support Winners Edge and All Seasons because their prices are always the lowest.

My riding has been a little lazy lately. Its been brutally hot and honestly im yet to find a good route. The only good route I've found includes the ascent of 2 'mountains'. The first is a 14% beast for 3-4 km and the other is a ondulating long climb. The problem with it is that:1. I am not the mountain goat I though I was 2. Everyuphill section has a grade of 10%+. Not much easier from the earlier climb. Anywho, its pretty depressing!

Yesturday (tuesday), I decided to get off my ass and go ride 70-80k. Checked out a website that shows routes that other people recommend. I found a good one that goes to the ocean and rides by it for a while. The roads looked like they were pretty quiet and it would be a plesant Bermuda like ride. Errror 1 - Getting to the coast with @$$face's directions took me along some of Brisbane's busiest roads, not to mention the number of red lights. Bikely.com, is used by newbies. DO NOT USE IT.

I was already on my way so I wasn't going to turn back. 25km of painful city riding. Getting to the coast was awesome. It was like the Grand Bend Strip for about 10-15km. I ended up overshooting my turn because I was enjoying the road so much. Quick turn around and I was back on my way. The directions took me through the back of the beachtown, which was quite nice but I had no idea of what was going to be around the next corner.

You might be interested to know it is 'Magpie Swooping Season" here. Magpies are these cool looking white and black birds. I remember shouting to Linds from the balcony "Whoa! Look at that cool ozzi bird" when i first got here. Well they weren't so cool anymore. I'd heard of horrifying stories where they things swoop form the trees and aim for your eyes and peck the $hit out of you but I was clearly better and cooler than the suckers who had been attacked.

So, I went around the round about and was heading down a faux downhill. In the small ring going a half decent click of about 45 (all info from my Polar computer graph). Out of nowhere I felt and heard something nipping the back of my helmet. What the flying PHUCK??!! It was this black and white bird, wings extended, trying to make road kill out of me. I've heard these things attack for the eyes, so wanting to keep my sexy eyes in my face I fumbled putting it in the big ring. Not to mention I love my new Polarised Radars (you tha man Kory). First dumping the derailleur all the way down(damn campy) and then finally hitting the big ring. For all those people I've told that dumping of the gears in the back end is useless, I lied. I went to my 11 in the matter of half a second and went as hard as I could in a FULL OUT SPRINT. Adrenaline feeding my muscles, I maxed out at 76 (polar) and averaged 66 for that what seemed like an eternity. The bugger didn't let up. And, I might mention, didn't have a problem keeping up. Chased me for just shy of a kilometer before I started swinging my arm backyards and scared him away. I stoped immidiatly, totally out of breath and straight up dead. Sucked back some gatorade and water and gathered my self. Realized I missed my turn because I was riding away from Ale Jet, I had to ride back towards the beast and hook a left.

He'll be gone or tired right?

Now riding a faux uphill, I scan the skies looking for this Death Eater. Not a bird in sight, I'm in the clear and laughing about the whole ordeal. 100 meters away from my turn, I see the bastard on a lamp post. Adrenaline rushes through my veins all over again, putting my gears in the big ring again. I set a good tempo and cut a car off turning left because I can see the thing jump off the lamp out of the corner of my eye. Meanwhile, the girl in the passenger seat is pointing and laughing at me being chased by this bird. Because swinging my arm worked last time, I am riding as hard as I can while swinging my left arm backyards wanting nothing more than smoking it and letting it get run over by the car now behind me. That didn't happen. When I could come close, the thing would ease up only to come swooping down faster. It did this 3-4 times over the space of another kilometer. Finally, after only bruising my ego, he let up and left me alone. I dont think I can even explain the state of exhaustion I was left in. Brutal. I just wanted to be in bed, under the covers away from any threat from anything. I still had another 30km ahead of me. 30km of open skies in a country that has most of the most dangerous animals in the world.

The ride took me through more busy roads and I was cursing the idiot who mapped out this ride. Busy roads and murderous birds. I wasn't happy. 3.5 hours for 80k. My heartrate didn't drop below 170 after the whole thing which is super high considering I couldn;t go faster than 25km/h!

Now im scrared as hell to go riding! Its one thing outriding a dog or something, but you can't see these bastards coming. A bunch of zipties to the helmet apparently does something. But I am too chicken to test out the theory right now!

I'm off to Fiji in a week to try and forget this traumatic experience.

And then I'll be a working man! Talk soon!
